Microsoft starts running ads on the Microsoft Store

Microsoft has started testing ads in the Microsoft Store, an idea the company originally announced in May this year.

The change is taking place with the launch of the latest preview build of Windows 11 for the Dev Channel in the Windows Insider Program, and Microsoft is encouraging developers to join the waitlist and participate in testing.

Ads work exactly as you expect them to, and they will show up in search results specifically to promote certain apps.

Microsoft explains that only developers who have already published applications in the Microsoft Store are authorized to participate in the program and to launch advertising campaigns.

Currently just a limited test

“We are also excited to introduce Microsoft Store Ads, a new product designed to help developers grow their business by showcasing their apps or games to the right customers at the right time and to inspire Microsoft Store customers with engaging content and quality. A developer of a music-making app, for example, will be able to create an ad campaign to pitch their app to an audience that loves music or enjoys making music,” Microsoft said in May when announcing the new program. .

“In the coming months, developers will be able to create ad campaigns in the Microsoft Store using Microsoft Advertising. Only developers whose content is published on the Store will be able to run ad campaigns, ensuring ads are contextual to customers. »

At this point, it’s unclear when users running the stable version of Windows 11 will start seeing ads in the Microsoft Store, but for now the company is just running the tests to make sure everything is working properly.

Of course, the program would be expanded with new slots for developers as Microsoft gathers feedback on the introduction of ads.
