Microsoft: Windows 11 now has an HDR display problem
As is typical for a major release of Windows, Windows 11 rolls out with its fair share of issues. Whether it’s functionality issues like lower than expected performance or compatibility issues like the NVMe SSD issue we discussed. Microsoft now says the platform is also having issues with some screens.
Specifically, Windows 11 distorts colors on some HDR monitors. Microsoft says the operating system has trouble handling sparse color profiles, which can have a negative effect on some screens. Users may find that their screen does not reproduce white or yellow well in image editing applications.
Microsoft confirms the issue in a error report with the following description:

“After installing Windows 11, some image-editing programs may not render colors correctly on some HDR displays. This is commonly seen with white colors, which may display as bright yellow or other colors.
This issue occurs when certain Win32 color rendering APIs return unexpected information or errors under specific conditions. All color profile management programs are unaffected, and the color profile options available on the Windows 11 settings page, including Microsoft’s Color Control Panel, should work fine.
To fix
Microsoft is currently working on a fix and plans to roll it out in January. That almost certainly means it will be available as part of the January 2022 Patch Tuesday cumulative update.
As for the broader performance issues that caused problems on Windows 11, Microsoft is also promising those for 2022. However, since Microsoft is committed to annual updates, these improvements may not arrive. before Windows 11 22h2. In other words, about a year after the initial launch of the platform.
Yes, that means a fall patch for those performance issues.
