Firefox is coming to the new Microsoft Store for Windows 11 and 10

Firefox has joined the new Microsoft Store and is available today for download directly through the storefront, meaning there is no longer a need to download the browser from the web. In its announcement of the news, Mozilla reiterated that Firefox is the only independent browser that uses its own engine available on the Microsoft Store today. “By maintaining its own engine with Gecko, Firefox is able to enforce its privacy-protecting features such as Total Cookie Protection and Enhanced Tracking Protection, and provide users with super-fast rendering using WebRender , secure sandboxing using Site Isolation, and a powerful styling engine known as Quantum CSS.”

Mozilla mentioned that Microsoft’s old store policies didn’t allow Firefox because of the Gecko element, but now that problem is a thing of the past. Whether you’re using Windows 11 or Windows 10, you can access Firefox directly through the Redmond storefront.

Of course, since Firefox uses its own installer, all of its updates come from within the browser itself, not from the Microsoft Store.

Update: Firefox uses Microsoft MSIX Installer (opens in a new tab)meaning this is a “proper” store app and should update automatically through the store itself.

And browsers aren’t the only thing coming to the store. Already we see a storefront with Epic Games Store available in the Microsoft Store. Apps such as Discord have also caught on. These arrivals are largely due to Microsoft’s revised policies and rules.
