Windows App SDK 1.0 from Microsoft is available. Will it fix Microsoft’s past mistakes?
Microsoft has released stable version 1.0 of its Windows Application Software Development Kit (SDK) Today, November 16. Formerly known as “Project Reunion”, the platform is intended to bridge the app gap that Microsoft created for itself nearly a decade ago when it first launched the Windows platform. Universal (UWP).

Microsoft is counting on the Windows App SDK to help the company fix some of its past mistakes created by its “Universal Apps/One Windows Platform Strategy”, which relied on UWP to supplant Win32 and developers are making great efforts to bring their existing apps onto this platform. When Windows 8 failed and developers balked at switching to UWP, Microsoft officials shifted gears.
In 2019, Gallo outlined the plan to try to unify Microsoft’s Windows development platforms and create a situation where developers could and would simply build “Windows apps”, rather than Win32 or UWP apps.
In May 2020, Microsoft released previews of the first two official Reunion components: WinUI 3 and WebView 2. WinUI 3 is the new native UI framework for Windows 10. WebView 2 is a control for embedding content Web in an app. In March 2021, Microsoft passed the 0.5 milestone with Project Reunion.
With version 1.0, Microsoft supports WinUI 3 for use by full WinUI 3 applications. In a future release, Microsoft will also support WPF, WinForms, and other apps with WinUI 3 through XAML Islands. Version 1.0 supports text rendering, resource management, application lifecycle, and windowing for both packaged and unpackaged applications. Support for push notifications is planned for a future version of the Windows App SDK, according to The roadmap.
