Windows 11 bug can only allow administrators to print

Microsoft is working on a fix for a known issue affecting Windows 11 clients that causes a prompt for administrator credentials before each attempt to print.

According to Microsoft, this problem affects Windows environments where print clients and print servers are in different time zones.

“You might receive a prompt for administrative credentials every time you try to print in environments where the print server and print client are in different time zones,” the company explains.

Affected platforms include Windows client and server versions:

  • Client: Windows 11, version 21H2; Windows 10, version 21H1; Windows 10, version 20H2; Windows 10, version 2004; Windows 10, version 1909; Windows 10, version 1809; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019; Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2016; Windows 10, version 1607; Windows 10 Enterprise 2015 LTSB; Windows 8.1; Windows 7 SP1
  • Server: Windows Server 2022; Windows server, version 20H2; Windows server, version 2004; Windows server, version 1909; Windows server, version 1809; Windows Server 2019; Windows Server 2016; Windows Server 2012 R2; Windows Server 2012; Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1; Windows Server 2008 SP2

While Redmond has already fixed the issue for Windows versions previously released in the September and October updates, a workaround to resolve this issue is not available for Windows 11 customers at this time.

Affected customers running previous versions of Windows (including Windows 10) may resolve issues by installing the September Patch Tuesday and October Patch Tuesday cumulative updates.

Microsoft says an update that will fix this problem on Windows 11 is expected to be released in late October.

Fortunately, the known issue should not impact home users, as affected systems are more commonly found in corporate environments.

Other printing problems in Windows 11

Microsoft has also confirmed other known Windows 11 issues that caused printers to fail to install on systems in corporate environments last week.

As Redmond explained, printer installation processes can fail when attempted over the network on devices that access printers through print servers using HTTP connections.

Printer installation may also not be successful over Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) in organizations sharing IPP printers using printer connections.

Last week, Microsoft confirmed a third known issue that resulted in custom print properties not being delivered correctly to print clients.

Even without causing print operations to fail, customers using affected devices would only print with default settings.
