[UPDATE 18.01.22 – 16:20 CET] Microsoft has now sent out-of-band updates covering Windows Server KB updates in Patch Tuesday. The company claims that the new updates will fix the issues caused by the original patch. However, some KB versions have not yet received an out-of-band update.

[17.01.22 – 15:54 CET] Last week, we reported on Microsoft’s decision to pull its January 2022 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows Server. Severe bugs caused by these versions of the knowledge base meant that they were unusable for users. It seems that Microsoft quickly fixed the problems because since 01/14/22 the updates are available again.

So it took the company about a day to fix the issue after pulling the updates on January 13. It should be noted that the updates were never removed from the Microsoft catalog, but came from Windows Update.

Maybe it was a mistake to remove the updates and Microsoft quickly fixed the error. Although the company is silent on this scenario, there is no doubt that these Patch Tuesday releases for Windows Server are causing issues.

In an email to BleepingComputer, Microsoft acknowledges the flaws and is currently investigating them. Additionally, these issues are now listed in Windows Message Center Known Issues with the following details:

“After installing KB5009557 on domain controllers (DCs), affected versions of Windows servers may restart unexpectedly. To note: On Windows Server 2016 and later, you are more likely to be affected when domain controllers use Shadow Principals in Enhanced Security Admin Environment (ESAE) or environments with Privileged Identity Management (PIM).

Serious problems

Users have reported bugs causing domain controllers to restart, ReFS column to disappear, and functionality issues in Hyper-V. During this month’s January 2022 Patch Tuesday, Windows Server is making the following updates:

KB5009624 for Windows Server 2012 R2, KB5009557 for Windows Server 2019, and KB5009555 for Windows Server 2022.

These issues persist, so it’s worth considering pausing this month’s Patch Tuesday for Windows Server users until Microsoft can fix the issues. However, this means that users end up with the security vulnerabilities that the updates were supposed to fix.

Of course, this is a common problem with Microsoft’s update cycle around patches. Several times over the years, Patch Tuesday updates have caused major problems in Microsoft services.

Tip of the day: The default Windows font these days is Segoe UI, a fairly simple, no-frills typeface that is used in many Microsoft products. However, while some like this understated style, others are looking to change the Windows font to something with a bit more personality.

Fortunately, Microsoft lets you change Windows fonts, but that doesn’t make it particularly easy. In our tutorial, we show you how to change the system font in Windows 10 or restore it again if you don’t like the changes.
