Is Microsoft Stock a Good Buy for a Tech Portfolio? (NASDAQ: MSFT)

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) is one of the top tech holdings in our portfolio. The company has transformed since CEO Satya Nadella took over. The tech giant continues to drive growth in the SaaS space. Moreover, its momentum was also supported by the strength of its Azure IaaS. This allowed the company to continue moving its customers’ legacy workloads and applications to the cloud. Additionally, it is exposed to several software themes in the areas of productivity, automation, cybersecurity, data analytics, CRM, ERP, gaming, and metaverse. Moreover, it also has a cloud communications segment which has grown rapidly.

Therefore, we believe investors can take advantage of the company’s well-diversified technology business model by buying MSFT shares. In addition, the company combines growth and profitability very well.

Microsoft stock has a strong and unmistakable long-term uptrend over time. Therefore, it has proven to be a solid stock for tech investors to hold as an anchor stock. Additionally, investors in MSFT have benefited from market confidence in its resilient business model.

Nevertheless, MSFT stock also suffered during the recent tech bear market. It has fallen more than 15% from its November highs. Admittedly, this was a steep drop for the SaaS monolith. However, its “high growth” but unprofitable/less profitable peers have been beaten even more dramatically (which we discussed in a recent article).

But such a steep correction also created a fantastic opportunity for long-term investors. MSFT’s NTM EBIT multiple of 24.2x returned closer to its 5-year average of 22.2x. Moreover, its NTM FCF yield now seems more attractive at 3.2% (5-year average: 3.9%).

Furthermore, its consensus price targets ((PT)) also look constructive. We can observe that its more conservative PTs have consistently supported Microsoft stock price over the past three years. The stock is currently trading significantly below its most conservative PTs. Our fair value estimates also suggest that MSFT stock appears reasonably valued (+/- 10% of fair value).

Keen tech investors should have a good understanding of Microsoft’s well-diversified business model. The company operates three solidly profitable segments that have continued to support its robust growth. Even its former More Personal Computing segment has seen respectable growth as Microsoft sees a revival in the PC. As a result, it has helped Microsoft turn the wheel in its other productivity suite as its users continue their Windows journey. Chief Financial Officer Amy Hood pointed out (edited): “There are more PCs per household and more time spent on PCs. We continue to see that even with hybrid working. Windows 11, I think, is a great investment to have a modern system and beautiful user experience for Windows. We see a good response.

Product manager Panos Panay also wrote an insightful article in January highlighting the momentum of Windows 11. He articulated (edited):

Windows 11 is a catalyst for engagement and growth. We’ve seen strong demand and preference for Windows 11, with people accepting the offer to upgrade to Windows 11 at twice the rate seen for Windows 10.

Windows 11 also has the highest quality and product satisfaction scores of any version of Windows we’ve ever shipped. Windows 11 drives increased engagement people spend 40% more time on their Windows 11 PC compared to Windows 10.

We also explained Microsoft’s momentum in cloud computing and cybersecurity. Even though AWS (AMZN) continues to be the #1 hyperscaler, Azure has seen strong momentum in hybrid and multicloud. Additionally, its SaaS advantage has also given Microsoft tremendous leverage to integrate new productivity tools and automation software in-house. Such integration has also been very beneficial for its operating margins seen above in its Intelligence Cloud segment.

Nevertheless, Google Cloud (GOOGL) (GOOG) has also been aggressive lately in the area of cybersecurity. It successfully acquired Mandiant (MNDT) to strengthen its cybersecurity architecture, leveraging Mandiant’s MDR capabilities. Microsoft is also rumored to have expressed interest in the deal. However, Google Cloud probably still needs to acquire a top EDR partner to improve its XDR offering. By contrast, Microsoft already has a highly advanced cybersecurity solution, worth $15 billion, up 45% year-on-year.

Is the MSFT stock a buy, sell or hold?

Microsoft Previews Delaying Brute-Force NTLM Login Attempts in Windows Server

Microsoft this week announced a preview of its upcoming enhancements to Windows Server (“VNext”), which includes a new approach to deter brute-force attempts to guess system passwords and gain network access.

This new approach is known as the Windows NT LAN Manager (NTLM) Server Message Block (SMB) Authentication Rate Limiter. The rate that this feature limits is the period of time between attempts to guess passwords for NTLM logins. Microsoft is now previewing this feature in its new Windows Server Insider build 25075 for use by testers.

The idea behind the SMB Authentication Rate Limiter is to thwart attackers who use automated “dictionary” methods to guess NTLM connections. NTLM is an older challenge-response authentication protocol that is still supported for use with Windows system authentications, although Microsoft recommends using Kerberos instead.

To invoke the SMB Authentication Rate Limiter, IT pros use a PowerShell commandlet. It allows them to specify the delay between NTLM login attempts in milliseconds. Microsoft has already specified a default timeout of two seconds (2,000 milliseconds) for Windows Insider Program testers, affecting Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 operating systems.

“As of Windows Insider build 25069.1000.220302-1408 and later on Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022, the SMB Server service now implements a default delay of 2 seconds between each NTLM-based authentication failure,” explains the announcement.

IT pros can set the timeout however they like, but Microsoft is experimenting with the default two seconds. He wants feedback on using the SMB Authentication Rate Limiter Preview, as “some third-party apps may experience issues with this new feature.” Microsoft may also change the default timeout, based on user feedback it receives.

Kerberos users can relax, because “this behavior change has no effect on Kerberos, which authenticates before an application protocol like SMB connects,” the announcement explains.

Frustrate attackers
Essentially, Microsoft is trying to make life difficult for brute-force password guessers with the SMB Authentication Rate Limiter feature.

Attackers can typically use “common open source tools” to send NTLM login attempts at a rate of “hundreds of login attempts per second,” said Ned Pyle, senior program manager for the Windows Server engineering group, in this Microsoft Tech Community post (which includes a demo).

When 300 brute-force password guessing attempts per second are sent by an attacker over five minutes, that’s 90,000 password attempts in a relatively short period of time. However, adding a default two-second delay between such password attempts would lengthen such an attack period to “a minimum of 25 hours”, Pyle explained. Such a delay can make Windows Server less attractive as a target.

Microsoft plans to add the SMB Authentication Rate Throttling feature to its next new versions of the Windows operating system, both server and client, this year, and the feature may also be backported to older Windows Server products. , according to Pyle, in this discussion on Twitter. Here’s how Pyle put it:

Functionality [SMB authentication rate limiter] will come in the next major server and client OS release, in the WS2022 Azure Edition Annual Update later this year, and likely as a backport in WS2022 and possibly 2019. It will take see how the preview goes.

Pyle referred to the SMB Authentication Rate Throttling feature as another SMB security enhancement Microsoft has made since the release of Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022. “Legacy” or older behaviors of SMB will be covered in future versions of the Windows operating system, Pyle added. .

Windows Server Insider Programs from Microsoft
The Windows Server Insider program allows IT professionals to test and provide feedback on features that may or may not come in a future Windows Server update release. This release of build 25075 is a preview of the next server release, and not necessarily the current Windows Server 2022 product, Microsoft’s announcement pointed out.

“The brand has not yet been updated and remains Windows Server 2022 in this preview – when reporting issues, please refer to ‘VNext’ rather than Windows Server 2022 which is currently in the market,” said explained the announcement.

Microsoft plans to launch an Insider program specifically for Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Azure Edition users, followed by another for Azure Stack HCI Azure Edition users, Pyle noted, in this March 15 tech community post.

Microsoft Store on the web gets a revamped interface

A new design for the web version of the Microsoft Store is live. It has the Preview tag at the top indicating that it is still an experimental design.

Microsoft overhauled its Store app on PC when it released Windows 11 last year. It was a much needed change. I find myself using the Store app a lot more on Windows 11 than on Windows 10. The new design is quite good, easier to navigate and faster in performance compared to its predecessor. It’s not perfect, there’s always room for improvement.

New design for Microsoft Store on the web

Microsoft Store’s redesigned web interface, first spotted by FireCubeStudios. It resembles the design of the Store app on Windows 11. The sidebar on the left provides a better way to sift through the different categories of apps.

The website is accessible from this url. It has the same card-like interface for apps, screenshots in app listings, descriptions, and more. There’s also a new section for user reviews, and you can sort reviews by recency or usefulness.

The Microsoft Store on the web isn’t particularly useful, it always redirects you to its desktop program to download the apps you want. So it takes an extra click, but since the Store app’s interface isn’t particularly mouse-friendly, the web version turns out to be better. The latter facilitates the sharing of links to applications, since there are no restrictions that prevent us from using the context menu of the browser (except for the sidebar).

An article on Thurot’s blog points out that the web version shows the date an app was updated. On the other hand, the Microsoft Store application does not give us this data. It still lacks other useful information such as release notes, build numbers, and system requirements for apps. Another significant absentee from the reworked web version is the games section of the Store, which may be added in the future.

Microsoft must organize its Store application

All of these improvements are nice and welcome. But, let’s not forget the elephant in the room, the content available on the Store. I am not talking about the quality of the apps, but about the existence of many fake apps available on the Microsoft Store. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen sneaky apps on the storefront. Does Microsoft even care about this problem?

Not only do these deceptive apps violate the license, copyright of the programs they imitate, but they can be potentially dangerous i.e. malware. Some of these applications appear directly on the first page of search results. This will not only confuse the average user, but someone who doesn’t know about it may end up installing a fake app instead of the original one, as they couldn’t tell the difference between the two. Why? Because the apps name and/or icon were similar.

Some of these fake apps are also not free, you have to pay for these illegal programs. It’s really embarrassing, Microsoft needs to organize its store responsibly, checking every app before it’s allowed to be released, to protect its consumer base.
