Microsoft’s Windows 11 declares war on Apple by bringing to market a new App Store model taking zero commissions and more
Earlier today, Microsoft unveiled the new Windows 11 which will hit the market later this year, the first major overhaul of its operating system since 2015. Below is a brief overview of Windows 11 from today’s Windows 11 event.
The new Microsoft Store, killing Apple’s App Store model
Windows will also include a new app store that directly targets Apple’s App Store model by allowing software developers to use their own integrated payment systems and pay no commission to Microsoft. It will also allow users to find and run Android mobile apps on their laptops and PCs, with technology support from Amazon.com and Intel Corp.
That was today’s story and Reuters also focused on this point adding that “These measures contrast with Apple’s ‘walled garden’ approach, in which the iPhone maker only allows users to download software from the App Store. and imposes controls on software developers, including the requirement to use Apple’s integrated payment systems and pay commissions of up to 30%.
The changes amount to a clash of visions between Microsoft, whose market cap recently topped $2 trillion, and Apple, the only other U.S.-listed company to hit a $2 trillion valuation. This also challenges Alphabet Inc’s Google Play Store, which also charges developers commissions. It was one of the big surprises announced today.
Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, also hammered home that message, saying “Windows has always represented sovereignty for creators and agency for consumers.”
Obviously, Apple captured this key announcement about the new Microsoft Store by Microsoft Chief Product Officer Panos Panay as featured in the video below.
Apple fans could now understand why Microsoft was testifying against Apple and siding with Epic Games. Microsoft was preparing to upset the model of Apple’s App Store. We can also understand why the US and European antitrust commissions are so lethal against the Apple Store model, knowing full well that Microsoft will break the rules set by Apple and Google this fall.
Microsoft has always tried to find a way to get revenge on Apple for the iPhone revolution that killed its market dominance in a short time. Their new Microsoft Store model could be a major win for them over time if Apple refuses to change their current App Store model in due course.
while Apple fans won’t be moved by what Microsoft has done, developers could be easily swayed to make more money from the Windows Store and start developing for Windows first to build a new business model which could make them more money.
While only time will tell if this strategy will actually be a winner for Microsoft, one thing is certain – Microsoft’s new store model has just set the Apple Store model on fire in the tech world and antitrust commissions around the world won’t. will only be emboldened by this decision. and push harder for major changes in the Apple App Store.
Although the security issue is still a hot topic for Apple, antitrust groups, in general, just don’t buy it. The only question now is how far the government will go to force the switch to the App Store (and Google Play).
