Microsoft’s stock jumps to $32 as Windows 8 arrives this month

Microsoft has officially announced that it will launch the consumer preview version of Windows 8 on February 29 at Mobile World Congress. []

This indicates that Microsoft is on schedule with its Windows 8 launch roadmap and may be able to meet its original planned launch deadline of May or June 2012 without any delays.

Windows 8 will compete with Apple and Linux-based distributions in the desktop operating system space, and Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android in the tablet operating system market.

Windows 8 will decide the fate of Microsoft in 2012

We expect Windows 8 to be a bigger hit than Windows 7, which has sold around 550 million licenses to date. Along with Windows 8, Microsoft will also launch the Windows App Store, which will be the central repository for Windows software and allow users to access all available software from a single location.

The Windows App Store could become a billion-dollar business in its own right, thanks to the success of Apple’s App Store.

Windows is nearly 25% of Microsoft’s $32 Trefis price estimate, nearly 5% above the current market price. It dominates the desktop and laptop operating system markets, and we expect it to gain significant market share in the tablet operating system market in the next couple of years as well.
