Microsoft Windows, Office and Teams groups will experience a slowdown in hiring
As global economic uncertainty continues to loom, Microsoft Corp. announced that its Windows, Office and Teams conferencing divisions would experience a slowdown in hiring. As the new fiscal year approaches, Microsoft is looking to shift its priorities to maximize resources.
In an email, Executive Vice President Rajesh Jha informed all employees that all new hires must be approved by him and his management team. The groups in question, Windows, Desktop, and Teams Chat, have all seen expansions in the near past, and thus moved to a lower place in Microsoft’s resource allocation list.
However, the slowdown will not affect the entire company and will be limited to the teams mentioned above only. A Microsoft spokesperson said the slowdown is a precautionary measure at a time of global economic peril.
In a statement, Microsoft said, “As Microsoft prepares for the new fiscal year, it is ensuring the right resources are aligned with the right opportunity. Microsoft will continue to increase its workforce over the coming year and that will put more emphasis on where those resources go.
Microsoft isn’t the only company reconsidering hiring frequencies. Recently, the Silicon Valley social media giant Meta has adopted a much stricter hiring freeze following poor performance in recent quarters. Nvidia Corp., arguably the hardest-hit company since the 2020 pandemic, and the resulting chip shortage, also plans to curb hiring for FY23. (A high-end GPU in the series -30 in 2022 costs as much as a full build of a custom PC with an analog -20 series GPU used before.)
