Microsoft Windows Defender Renewal Notice Baffles PC Users
MONFORT HEIGHTS, OHIO — Got a computer with Microsoft Windows on it?
Then you have to watch for an email targeting many people that it’s time to renew your account.
David Anderson was setting up his fall decorations at his Monfort Heights home, when something scarier than any ghost appeared in his email account.
“It was a Windows Defender renewal order,” he said. “An invoice for a one-year subscription to Microsoft Windows Defender.”
He knew it was Microsoft’s antivirus program and saw it on his PC, but it was the price of the subscription that upset him.
“I was billed $300 and something for certain services,” he said.
Sure, we’ve all received spam, but when it says it’s from Microsoft, you might be careful.
And when he says “subscription renewal”, you could really pay attention.
“It looks very legit,” he said.
What are these emails about?
WindowsReport.com says emails like this are not legitimate, nor is a similar email claiming it’s time to renew Office 365.
All of these not only ask for payment, but also your login details, which can then be used to access your credit or debit card.
Anderson says it’s a trick no one needs to fall for.
Microsoft does not charge for any Windows updates or renewals, especially for hundreds of dollars. Windows Defender is its free antivirus system.
So don’t waste your money.
