Microsoft Windows 11 SE and Surface Laptop SE launched; Intended exclusively for educational purposes
Microsoft released Windows 11 earlier this year with a major design and feature overhaul. The new Windows update focuses on boosting productivity while delivering a suite of privacy features. Almost a month after rolling out Windows 11, the company has now announced Windows 11 SE, which is basically Windows 11 for schools. The Redmond-based American tech giant has also announced a new Surface Laptop SE. This is a budget laptop offering designed to support Apple’s entry-level Chromebooks and iPad. Microsoft Windows 11 SE
Microsoft Surface Laptop SE is the company’s low-cost laptop to take on popular Chromebooks and Apple iPads. The Surface Laptop SE is priced at $249 (about Rs. 18,500) and will be available in early 2022.
It has an 11.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9. The laptop has big bezels on all four sides of the screen with the Windows logo at the bottom. Since it’s a budget laptop aimed at school kids, the Surface Laptop SE gets Intel’s Celeron N4020 and Celeron N412. The laptop comes with options for 4GB/8GB of RAM along with 64GB/128GB of storage.
The budget laptop also has plenty of ports, including a USB Type-A, USB Type-C port, DC connector, and 3.5mm headphone jack. For video calls, there is a 1MP front camera. It runs Windows 11 SE, which is a lite version of Windows 11 for schools.

Windows 11 SE is optimized for Surface Laptop SE. Microsoft too said that other OEMs like Dell, Acer, Lenovo, Asus, HP, etc., will launch low-cost laptops running Windows 11 SE in the coming months. Windows 11 SE version is also optimized for Microsoft apps like Edge, Office, etc. It also supports third-party apps such as Chrome, Zoom. However, users cannot download these third-party apps directly because there is no Microsoft Store in Windows 11 SE. The company will allow certain applications for IT administrators to provision on SE machines. We can expect more apps to be licensed for the SE laptop in the coming months.
Microsoft has removed some unwanted features from the SE version like Snap layout, widgets, etc. which could be distracting. The software supports Chrome extensions and also backs up documents via OneDrive.
