Pwn2Own 2022 is underway in Vancouver and on the first day of the event, ethical hackers and event attendees managed to hack Microsoft’s Windows 11 twice. Teams were also successfully attacked. 100% of attempts were successful on day one.
For those who don’t know, Pwn2Own is an annual hacking event, candidates and cybersecurity experts demonstrate their skills in using bugs, zero-day exploits and other issues to legally hack various software. and receive rewards and recognition. The 2022 edition of Pwn2Own marks the 15th anniversary of the contest.
On day two however, things changed and of the two attempts on Windows 11, only one demo ended up being successful, leading to a 50% success rate on day two. The successful attempt was made by “T0” who was able to demonstrate how an inappropriate access control bug could lead to an elevation of privilege on Windows 11. For this successful exploit, T0 earned $40,000 and 4 Master of Pwn.
Meanwhile, contestant “namnp” was unable to demonstrate a successful feat because he failed to complete it within the time limit. The type of vulnerability the contest was trying to exploit was not disclosed, though it’s safe to assume it was some sort of privilege escalation bug. We also don’t know how well the competitor completed the task, as this detail was not disclosed.
